Boxstock The Movie 2011 - The UK Cigar Box Guitar Festival
I've just rediscovered this old video of the 2011 edition of Boxstock, the UK Cigar Box Guitar Festival.
Featuring:
StumbleCol
Lost Tone
Chickenbone John
Andy Bole and The Khalgani Dancers
Tinqui
Hollowbelly
Ben Prestage
It feels like a long time ago, and indeed it was! Back then I was somewhat younger, enthusiastic, ambitious and energetic. Nevertheless...Boxstock continues to happen. On this occasion we were fortunate to find a great venue and had some great performers...from UK, USA and France! It was a bit of a wild ride in terms of making it happen, logistically and financially.
It's a long video, so feel free to dip in and out of it..I may try and editing it down into a shorter form.

In the Chickenbone John workshop today

Here are a few things with we have on the bench at the moment. One is a licence plate guitar, and although it's a pretty simple project, it does require a fair amount of accurate working to ensure that the neck aligns properly and that the through body stringing is also bang-on.
How to carve a guitar neck by hand in two and a half minutes.
Переглядів 1,3 тис.3 місяці тому
Here's how to carve a cigar box guitar neck with just two simple hand tools - a half-round rasp and a spokeshave. I show this in real time, and including the set-up it takes just three minutes, all it needs is some sanding to smooth out the tool marks and it's done. We use power tools in our workshop, but I think woodworking is about using the appropriate tool and technique, and for carving a g...

Adjustable height bridges for cigar box guitar
Переглядів 2 тис.4 місяці тому
We use simple floating bridges on a lot of our guitars, and in the past we've made a few adjustable height types, but never been entirely happy with them, as they wear rather clumsy and bulky. Here's our latest idea inspired by the simple and basic adjustable height floating bride used on Harmony Stella guitars. It's all pretty simple, although a little fiddly to make, but they do work nicely. ...

Here's a very simple fretless cigar box guitar -3 strings, short scale (22 3/4 inch with a single coil electric pickup. There's no need for the action to be high, if properly made these guitars can be played with fingers in a conventional way and with a slide. Fender Super Champ X2 - a Princeton for 1/4 the price?
Переглядів 3,9 тис.6 місяців тому
Here's my thoughts on the Fender Super Champ X2. For players on a tight budget, this is perhaps the nearest Fender amp to a Princeton...and at almost 1/4 the price it is much more affordable. Why do I suggest this? Both are valve (tube) amps (the Super Champ is valve/tube hybrid), They have 10 inch speakers,. Both put out about the same power (Princeton 12 Watt , Super Champ X2 15 Watt) They ar...
3 string Partagas "Chickenbacker" cigarbox guitar by Chickenbone John

I like putting "wings" onto cigar box guitars - we can use cast-off pieces of timber to fashion the body extensions, and it makes the guitar better balanced for playing on a strap, and more comfortable for playing when seated. This one is somewhat inspired by Rickenbacker body shapes, so perhaps that makes it a "Chickenbacker" . This one has a humbucker with a coil split switch, a simple but ef...

    Good points John For an electric CBG (when you don't care about the acoustics) with a surface-mount pickup, is it okay to NOT recess the top surface of the neck between the fret and the bridge? I'm going to attach the neck to the top of the cigar box. Should I glue the top neck surface to the bottom surface of the cigar box top?

    • @ChickenboneJohn
      @ChickenboneJohn 7 днів тому

      We almost always have the underside of the top of the box in contact with the neckstick. We NEVER glue in our necks - if you need to get into the box to tinker with the neck angle, repair electrics etc, glueing in a neck makes it virtually impossible to take the guitar apart. Repairability is important, so we always fix our necks into the boxes with simple wood screws.

    Interesting. Could the string ferrules be mounted into the rear face of the neck instead of into the rear face of the body? Then the strings would not pass through the space below the neck inside the body. And for hinged cigar boxes, you could flip open the back when the strings are strung. (Am I correct about this last one?)

    • @ChickenboneJohn
      @ChickenboneJohn 12 днів тому

      There's really no point in doing that, it makes everything more complicated as you'd have to drill out the back to load the strings and you couldn't easily do that with the adjustable neck system. It's much simpler to do what we do and put a continuous packer from neck to tail in the back of the box.

    Hey CJ, Is your bridge held in place only by the tension of the strings? Can you move it around? Would you move it to: Adjust the tone? Adjust the action? For a good position to rest your hand?

    • @ChickenboneJohn
      @ChickenboneJohn 12 днів тому

      It's a floating bridge, not glued down, which is how pretty much every guitar with tailpiece is made. It allows you to move it to get the intonation right.

    • @TheLookingOne
      @TheLookingOne 10 днів тому

      @@ChickenboneJohn Ah. Have you played CBGs with fixed adjustable bridges with saddles and a tailpiece? If so, do you find them to hold their tune longer than floating bridges?

    • @ChickenboneJohn
      @ChickenboneJohn 10 днів тому

      @@TheLookingOne That's a really illogical way to make a guitar. Using a trapeze tailpiece is redundant with a "hardtail" stye bridge. Either use a hardtail adjustable bridge or a tailpiece a with a floating bridge.

    What about making a video where your installing a truss rod in the neck of one of them cool old Stella guitars you have, by routing a channel in the neck after steaming and hot knifing the fretboard off, ..or better yet, just leaving the fretboad on and going in thru the Back of the neck and routing a channel for the truss rod, and then covering the routed channel by gluing in a bit of hardwood for the Skunkstripe, and then routing a little access route into the front face of the paddle so it can be adjusted at the headstock, ..? 🙏🌌🔥🛐

    • @ChickenboneJohn
      @ChickenboneJohn Місяць тому

      These Stellas have a fixed steel reinforcement in the neck. I've had many of these through my workshop and most of them had decently straight necks that didn't need any structural work. Installing a truss rod really wouldn't be worth the effort on such a cheap guitar.
